FCAI Education

One of the major bottlenecks for the adoption of AI in industry and society is the lack of experts at all levels. FCAI Education Program aspires to increase the competence of both the workforce and the general public.

You can learn more about our educational actions below.

Education of future experts

  • Growing AI curricula at both universities:

    • AI-focused computer science, data science and other degree programs on Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral levels – including the most popular Master’s program at Aalto University with the majority of students coming from outside Finland, and the most popular Master’s program (MSc in Data Science) at the University of Helsinki

    • Hugely popular introductory courses in AI and machine learning offering a possibility for students in other fields to learn the basics of AI

    • Fully-funded PhD positions: FCAI’s joint call (twice a year) & continuous call, ELLIS PhD program, and individuals positions in various groups at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki

Providing AI literacy for all

Our goal is to provide AI literacy for all. FCAI is contributing to the public's understanding of AI in a number of ways:

  • Public events and lectures

  • Massive open online courses (MOOCs):

    • Elements of AI published originally in May 2018. The course is also available in Finnish and it is being translated into all EU languages.

      • Intended for everyone interested in learning what AI is, what is possible (and not possible) with AI, and how it affects our lives – with no complicated math or programming required.

      • Already over 550 000 participants (40% female) and graduating students from over 170 countries (in December 2020)

      • Rated the world's best computer science MOOC on Class Central

    • Elements of AI part 2: Building AI a programming AI MOOC launched in fall 2020

      • During the course you will learn more about the actual algorithms that make creating AI methods possible. Some basic Python programming skills are recommended.

    • Ethics of AI, launched by the University of Helsinki in November 2020

      • The course is for anyone who is interested in the ethical aspects of AI – we want to encourage people to learn what AI ethics means, what can and can’t be done to develop AI in an ethically sustainable way, and how to start thinking about AI from an ethical point of view.

    • AI in Society, launched by the University of Helsinki in May 2022

      • The course examines how AI technology functions within its societal context: how AI changes society and social practices, how it is used in institutional settings, and what kind of societal level promises and challenges this technology poses.

    • Data Analysis with Python, University of Helsinki

      • Started in spring 2019, fully open and online from March 2020

    • Machine Learning with Python, Aalto University

      • This online course (2 ECTS) teaches some of the most widely-used methods to turn raw data into insights. You will learn methods that allow to answer questions like “Given the current number of Covid-19 infections, what is the number of intensive care units required?”. Machine Learning with Python is one of the most popular FiTech courses.

    • Artificial Intelligence, FITech

  • Education for children and youth through Aalto Junior, University of Helsinki Science Education, Linkki, and UniJunior including

    • Programming clubs with AI and robotics

    • School visits
