Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence FCAI hosts an AI Residency program for IT professionals in industry with hands-on attitude. Take a break from the hectic buzz of industry deadlines and return to exciting research projects in academia. We will match you with leading scientists in AI and machine learning, and offer you an excellent environment to further develop your skills. After the Residency, you will be able to help your company better understand the opportunities of AI and harness its potential.

Why FCAI?

FCAI is a vibrant research center for Artificial Intelligence in the Helsinki metropolitan area, bringing together the expertise in AI research from both academia and industry. Hundreds of researchers are involved in various research and educational activities, and dozens of industrial actors collaborate on joint initiatives. Moreover, as the birthplace of Linux, and the home base of Nokia Bell Labs, F-Secure, Rovio, Supercell, Slush (the biggest annual start-up event in Europe), Helsinki is the largest ecosystem of high-tech companies and R&D centers in Northern Europe.

FCAI is initiated by Aalto University, University of Helsinki, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. It has been selected as one of the prestigious Flagships of the Academy of Finland, a status granted to very few selected centers of excellence with high societal impact. The total budget of FCAI is 250 M€ over the next 8 years.

What’s the deal?

AI Residence is designed for software developers who wish to visit academia, contributing to collaborative AI research. The Residency contract will be negotiated together with the employing company of the applying candidate. The candidate must be employed by a company while applying to and during the AI Residence. The Residence period is for 2–12 months. Each contract will be tailor-made to meet the needs of all parties and can be set up for example as co-funded by FCAI and the company or fully funded by the company. In specific cases, we are also open to funding the position fully according to the university salary system.

We are currently looking for ICT professionals for the following profiles:

  • Top-notch software developers interested in bringing their knowledge and skills into machine learning and artificial intelligence research projects.

  • Advanced ICT professionals with software and machine learning experience interested in research collaboration with leading AI scientists.

We value expertise in:

  • Software for data science

  • Machine learning software, for example for Bayesian inference or deep learning

  • Simulation software

  • Security-sensitive software

  • Web design and technologies, especially front-end technologies

  • High-performance computing

  • Letter of motivation (length 1–2 pages) outlining your expertise and and what you’re interested in working on during the residence

  • Optional but highly recommended: a letter of recommendation from your employing company outlining how the AI Residency period would support your employing company and your learning as an employee

  • CV

  • Degree certificate (BSc, MSc, PhD)

  • Names and contact information of two referees
