NVAITC Webinar Series on AI Applications in Computational Sciences: Session 5 - AI Meets Nuclear Fusion

NVAITC Webinar Series on AI Applications in Computational Sciences

NVIDIA AI Technology Center Finland in collaboration with FCAI and CSC are pleased to announce a webinar series focusing on AI applications in computational sciences, with a goal of bringing together AI researchers and researchers in other fields. Each webinar will highlight a different scientific field and they are given by domain-specific experts who are using AI as part of their numerical simulation workflows. The webinars run from the beginning of March approximately every three weeks as part of the AI Across Fields Forum.

Session 5 - AI Meets Nuclear Fusion

Prof. Diogo R. Ferreira (University of Lisbon)
October 12, 16:00 Helsinki time

Abstract:

Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the Sun, and that is being replicated on Earth through a variety of different approaches. As we try to understand and control that process, a key issue is the ability to make sense of large amounts of diagnostics data collected from fusion machines. There are plenty of opportunities for AI and machine learning in the analysis and processing of fusion data, and here we illustrate some possible applications, using a specific diagnostic as an example. From the measurements collected by the bolometer system at JET (Joint European Torus), we use convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and variational autoencoders (VAEs) to perform image reconstruction, disruption prediction and anomaly detection, respectively.

Bio:

Diogo R. Ferreira is a professor at the University of Lisbon and researcher at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion at the same university, in Portugal. With a PhD in information systems (U. Porto, 2004) and a longtime interest in fusion, in 2014 he started using GPU Computing to accelerate data processing in fusion diagnostics. With the advent of Deep Learning, an explosion of new ideas ensued, particularly the possibility of using machine learning to better understand the physics of fusion experiments.
