Making the most of AI – A new instrument fosters collaboration between researchers and companies
FCAI creates AI that benefits our society and has a real impact on people’s lives. It actively collaborates with different companies, and the FCAI Industry & Society workshops provide a new forum for co-creation between research and industry.
Many organizations in Finland know how to apply the existing AI methodologies for their benefit. FCAI’s research takes this a step further, with strong knowledge and vision on AI’s future development and the newest methods. To get all the benefits of this expertise, it is crucial to create AI methods to answer real-world needs, testing and piloting the developed solutions in industrial and commercial environments.
FCAI’s first Industry & Society workshop, held on 25 March, brought together 50 participants from FCAI and different companies. The online workshop evolved around four tracks – health, industry, autonomous processes, and language. Each of these tracks recognized three to four preliminary ideas for new projects. These included improved health prediction, better industrial simulations, conscious machines or multilingual translation, just to give some examples.
The next step is to select the ideas with most potential and develop them further – building project consortiums, defining the projects and finding funding. Ultimately, the target is to find new or more efficient ways to use AI for the benefit of industry and our society.
While the work on refining the preliminary ideas continues, FCAI will host three more Industry & Society workshops this year. This is an on-going process and the themes for the forthcoming workshops will be adapted to the signals from the industry and the participants. These workshops have an instrumental role in meeting the FCAI’s research goals.
Save the date for the next online workshop that will take place on 20 May, 2020, at 3-5 p.m.!
