FCAI represents top-level artificial intelligence (AI) research. The real significance of research is measured by how its results are transferred to benefit our whole society. This requires close collaboration with industries and the public sector. At the same time, we are offering companies an opportunity to achieve unique competitiveness with the help of AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will affect all companies, and it is already being applied in our society at many levels. To enable the application of the latest methods as extensively and rapidly as possible, we need to be aware of the potential they offer. In addition, companies must identify how they could utilise this potential themselves for the creation of new products and services.

New business activities usually emerge in the crossroads where different people and organisations cross paths. The FCAI seminar series, Industry & Society Program Workshops, stimulates dialogue and important exchange of information. Setting the industry and research institutes on a collision course sparks innovation. The practical challenges and present problems of companies are listened to very carefully. Furthermore, the seminars offer companies an opportunity to mirror their development steps against those taken by others.

By enhancing dialogue and bringing down barriers between the worlds of research and industry we can build a fast link from cutting-edge research to practical implementation. The seminar series gives rise to new initiatives, helps identify synergies and ensures that we focus on challenges of relevance to us. However, most of the actual work is done between the events. We look for ways that help companies and researchers systematically set out to solve challenges together.

We are offering companies a link to FCAI’s state-of-the-art expertise and its extensive domestic and international networks. Through them, we will find the right specialists to solve the challenges at hand. Our aim is not to find the best talents in Finland but the best talents worldwide. Our objective is to generate new business activities, competitiveness and added value for the Finnish industry. With the help provided by world-class AI research, Finnish companies can grow into the world’s leading undertakings or stay in forefront of their industries.

At VTT, this work will be led by research professor Heikki Ailisto, who has been appointed to the FCAI steering group, and will have the overall responsibility of VTT’s FCAI activities. Read Ailisto’s thoughts on the new role here.
