“Europe needs fierce, significant and forward-looking investments in AI”

Jussi Herlin, Senior Business Analyst at KONE Corporation and one of the speakers at the Reboot with AI event on the fourth of November, believes that advanced technologies can bolster European competitiveness and aid us in combatting the climate crisis.

Jussi Herlin emphasizes that Europe needs strong, significant and forward-looking investments in the development of artificial intelligence capabilities and clusters in Europe.

Jussi Herlin, what is the role of AI in combatting the climate crisis?

AI, and related advanced digital technologies such as HPC and quantum computing, will play a crucial role in developing models e.g. to predict weather patterns, assessing de- and reforestation, and generally in helping us understand big, complex systems. Similarly the very methods of training machine learning algorithms need to be viewed critically and through a lens of “efficiency and frugality” to ensure they consume only the necessary amount of resources to achieve the desired results.

What does Europe need to do in the geopolitically tense AI landscape?

Europe needs to turn its gaze boldly forward while standing firm on the fundamental values it upholds in the world. We need fierce, significant and forward-looking investments into developing AI capabilities and clusters within Europe. Similarly we need to create an operating environment that attracts AI businesses to establish or expand their business here.

What is needed to address global challenges?

To address global challenges, we need global cooperation that is based on shared values. AI has a role to play in every conceivable global challenge, from climate crisis and its related challenges, to supply chain disruptions, immigration patterns, food production, and of course international security.
