AI Day 2020 brought people together online to discuss the latest developments in AI

FCAI’s annual event AI Day took place on November 26, 2020. The event was organized online this year which brought both challenges and new opportunities.

The program featured four distinguished keynote speakers that addressed the topical questions: where is Europe standing in the global competition of AI, and are there distinct characteristics in the European AI research and development? The four speakers, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, Samuel Kaski, Michela Milano and Francesca Rossi,  offered different approaches to these questions which were discussed further in the panel talk at the end of the program.

Alongside with the keynote program, AI Day 2020 offered dozens of scientific presentations and online posters introducing the latest developments in the Finnish AI research. Most of the presenters have also given permission to share their presentations publicly.

One of the main aims of the AI Day is to bring together researchers in academia and industry. To serve this purpose, the event also featured an industrial track starring Tero Ojanperä, Antti Poikola, Harri Santamala, and Nidhi Singh, as well as an industrial panel discussion.

Conventional face-to-face discussions had a smaller role this year. However, the virtual nature of this year’s event introduced possibilities for new types of matchmaking and information sharing. More people could join the event than ever before and as travelling wasn’t an issue, AI Day 2020 attracted participants from all over the world.

We warmly thank everyone who participated and hope to see you again next year!
