The third ELLIS Doctoral Symposium was held on August 28-September 1, 2023, hosted by ELLIS Unit Helsinki at Aalto University in Finland. Below are some of the week’s top moments!

The first and second industrial revolutions transformed methods of processing energy. The current digital revolution of big data, cybernetics, and AI is completely changing the methods of information processing, generation and conversion.
The impact is so much more powerful, because information processing is what is (thought to be) special about humans, and so close to our own capabilities. It’s important to think and work on these problems: machines can exploit correlations (i.e. pattern recognition) and understand the effects of “thinking” (causality), but (like the Greek gods), they lack the ethics to make responsible choices.
